
Our wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Josephine Marie Thorne Stottern, passed away at age 92, Wednesday, November 4, 2009. She was born June 2, 1917 in Mountain Lake, Florida, to Marie Dorfner and Wilfred Thorne. She married John Lee Stottern May 6, 1940 in Kimball, NB. She attended grades 1-12 at Cheyenne Mountain School, Colorado Springs, CO, graduating in 1936. Josephine attended Denver University 1936-1940 and received a B.S. Degree in 1978 from the University of Utah.
Our mom taught emotionally disturbed children at The Children’s Center in Salt Lake City, UT. She also worked for Job Service and the State Tax Commission prior to her move to St. George in 1995.
She was a member of the League of Women Voters, Delta Zeta Alumni Assn., past member of the American Business Women’s Assn., and was honored with the "Woman of the Year" award by the ABWA in 2005.
In St. George she tutored at the Shivwits Indian Reservation, volunteered for the Huntsman Senior games, and Chamber of Commerce. She was active in TOPS and Newcomers. Mom loved golf and all sports. She belonged to many bridge clubs and enjoyed the companionship of many good friends. She attended the Grace Episcopal Church.
She is survived by sons, Riley (Barbara) of St. George, UT, Bob (Julie) of Fairview, TX, Stuart of Santa Fe, NM; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; son, Steve; and sister, Geraldine Wright.
A viewing will be held Saturday, November 7, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, UT. Funeral services and burial will be held Monday, November 9, 11:00 a.m., at Mountain View Memorial Estates, 3115 E. Bengal Blvd., (7800 S), Salt Lake City, UT. There will be a viewing 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. prior to services.
