DeVon will be laid to rest at the Cedar City Cemetery, 685 N Main, Cedar City, UT 84720 at 3pm, same day. Family and friends are welcome to join.
DeVon was born in Cedar City Utah on March 27, 1933, to John Calvin Slack and Mae Wright Slack, the second of their nine children. Growing up, he delivered papers with his little dog Lucy by his side; and as he got older, summers were often spent herding sheep on Cedar Mountain. Dad loved his hometown, and there was never a shortage of mischievous childhood adventures he had with family and friends.
At 17, while working at a gas station, he met LouJean and knew instantly she would be his wife. Two years later they were married, and later sealed in the St George Temple. They spent 70 years happily together, first in Oregon raising their family, before returning to Southern Utah after serving their mission.
He was an active and passionate member of the LDS church. After retirement He and LouJean served as missionaries in the genealogy library in Salt Lake and at age 70, he was called to be bishop of the Coral Canyon First Ward. This would be one of the most cherished roles of his life, and he continues to be fondly remembered by the members he served.
DeVon’s life was a testament on how to love, serve and live with the utmost integrity. His example of loving father and husband was admired not only by his family, but by the people who knew him. So many who have had the honor of knowing him from his work life as a diesel mechanic to his beloved church family have continued to reach out to him throughout his life in love, support, and admiration. He truly was a special soul and will be missed by us all.
