Evona "Bonnie" Sellers Hammond

August 20, 1935 — June 14, 2022

Evona “Bonnie” Sellers Hammond passed away peacefully in the arms of her eternal companion on Tuesday June 14, 2022. She was born to Joseph & Myrtle Sellers in the family home in Hibbard, Idaho on August 20, 1935. She was one of nine children. She was raised in a home where she learned the value of hard work, strength of character, firm devotion, and faith in Jesus Christ.

She attended school in Rexburg, Idaho where she excelled as a gifted student, talented musician, and Madison High cheerleader.

There was not a more positive, loving, kind, and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother in the entire world. Everywhere she went and all those she met were touched and changed for the better by her eternal optimism and unconditional love. Her dazzling beauty and infectious smile lit up every room and her radiant spirit and welcoming hugs penetrated every heart.

Bonnie fell in love with F. Melvin Hammond and encouraged him to serve a 2 ½ year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Because of that single decision, their lives were changed forever. They were married and sealed for time and all eternity on September 14, 1956, in the Salt Lake Temple and were blessed with five daughters and one son: Melanie, Lezlee, Stephanie, Todd, Lisa, and Natalie. She adored her five son’s-in-law and daughter-in-law. Her Savior, faith, and family meant everything to her.

She served and influenced thousands of people in Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and various parts of the United States and Canada as her husband served as a Mission President, Area President, and General Authority for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She also served as the Matron of the Washing DC Temple for three years as her husband presided over the temple. She considered this assignment to be the icing on the cake.

She was an accomplished pianist, kept an immaculate home, was an amazing cook, and dressed to the nines. She loved to watch all sports and was a huge BYU and Jazz fan! She was also an articulate, beautiful teacher of the gospel, but most of all she was a zealous missionary who never missed an opportunity to share her testimony and love for the Savior in English and Spanish.

She is survived by her husband, Mel of St. George, her children Melanie (Randy) Rynearson of St. George, Utah, Lezlee (Stuart) Porter of St. George, Utah, Stephanie (Brad) Weekes of Park City, Utah, Todd (Noelle) Hammond of Rexburg, Idaho, Lisa (Mykel) Seebord of Draper, Utah, and Natalie (Shawn) Lindquist of Sandy, Utah, as well as twenty-eight grandchildren and forty-eight great-grandchildren, who all loved her dearly.

Words cannot describe what an incredible and amazing woman she was. There was only ONE Bonnie Hammond!
