Surrounded by her loving family, Arlene Hannig Stanworth peacefully passed away on September 23, 2024, in Hurricane, UT. She will always be remembered for her keen sense of style, her overarching love for her family, and for her testimony of her Savior Jesus Christ.
Arlene was born on December 14, 1931, to Joseph and Sopha Hannig in Washington, UT. As a young girl, she loved to play in the fields and streets and had many friends. She attended Woodward Junior High and eventually Dixie High School. A proud Flyer, she enjoyed her schooling experiences, especially as it related to the local boys.
On July 2, 1948, Arlene married the love of her life, James Dell Stanworth. Arlene and Dell (a recently returned US Navy Sailor) were excited to see where married life would take them. This union spanned nearly 65 years here on earth and will continue throughout eternity as a result of their Temple marriage. During those wonderful years, Arlene and Dell raised their four children and influenced many more. Arlene epitomized the life of a homemaker and could always be counted on for perfectly straight vacuum lines in the carpet and tasty homemade chicken noodle soup over creamy mashed potatoes.
Arlene always looked her best. She regularly visited the local beauty salon and encouraged her daughters and granddaughters to do the same. If friends and neighbors were interested in the latest fashion trends, all they needed to do was look to Arlene. Dell contributed to her lively style by buying her a new diamond ring every year. Those rings will be cherished for generations.
Arlene was blessed with a strong and binding love for her family. Starting with Dell, Arlene provided unending support for him as a serial entrepreneur. They loved to travel and spent many days together with family at their cabin on Kolob Mountain. That same love trickled down to her children as she supported them through their childhood and young adult years. Without missing a beat, her love flowed directly to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in a way that only a compassionate grandmother can. Nothing gave her more joy than being with family while sipping on a Diet Dr. Pepper and enjoying the salad bar at The Pizza Factory!
Finally, Arlene was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She held many callings in the church, regularly provided service to those in need, and exemplified the life of the Savior. She and Dell were able to serve a Family History Mission in Salt Lake City, UT at the Granite Mountain Vault. They also served regularly in the St. George Temple. Her faith carried her through many trials and tribulations and undoubtably continues to be a driving force for her today.
Arlene is survived by her children Della (Carroll) Gilley-Darr, DeAnna (Gary) Esplin, Judi (David) Scholzen and Jim (Suzy) Stanworth. She is also survived by her siblings Warren and Cleo. Arlene was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren whom she loved very much. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Sopha, her siblings Fern, Wilma, Glenna, Karren, Phoebe, Arnold, Willard, and Verden, by her husband Dell, her son-in-law William Gilley, and by her great-grandson Miles Fotheringham.
A private family memorial service will be held on Saturday September 28, 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to Primary Children’s Hospital in Arlene’s name.
Arrangements were made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary. 110 South Bluff Street, St. George, Utah. 435-673-2454. Family and friends are invited to share memories on Arlene’s digital memorial page at www.SpilsburyMortuary.com.
