Listen to Obituary

Galen John Smith, age 81, passed away on June 21, 2026. He was born on December 28, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Melvin Willard Smith and Lois Valanee Andreason Smith.

Galen was raised in Chesterfield, Utah, and graduated from Granger High School, where he began what would become a lifelong career in brick masonry. On September 11, 1964, he married the love of his life, JoAnn Lynn King, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they made their home in St. George after moving there in 1979, and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the St. George Temple on July 18, 1980.

A true craftsman, Galen dedicated his life to the masonry trade, always striving for perfection in every project he completed. His work stands as a lasting testament to his skill, pride, and strong work ethic. Beyond masonry, he was a master woodworker who lovingly created countless pieces of furniture and decorative items that will be treasured by family and friends for generations.

Galen was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his conversations were thoughtful and meaningful. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering dedication to his family, and the care he put into everything he did.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, JoAnn Smith of Enterprise, Utah; his children, Michelle (Ryan) Heaps of Elko, Nevada; Sandy (Todd) Terry of Enterprise, Utah; and Mike Smith of Middleton, Utah. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Kia and Keanan Adamson, Kirah Bland, Dax Heaps, Madison and Mason Terry, Nick Terry, and Maddox Smith; and his great-grandchildren, Gloria Adamson, Elika and Aiden Hilton, Peyton and Brekon Jones, Kyndall Graham, Kash and Presley Bland, Emryn Heaps, and Quinn and Raleigh Terry. He is also survived by his brother, Leonard (Shawna) Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Lois Smith; his son, Galen John Smith Jr.; his brother, Willard Smith; and his sisters, Valanee, Valene, and Rosie.
