James Malone

The Malone crew has lost its Captain. James Daniel "Dan" Malone set sail for his next port on May 21, 2025 after spending a long and fulfilling life filled with adventure. Dan remains the beloved father of Howard Brooks Malone of Sparks, Maryland, Amy (Patrick) Bourgeron of St. George, Utah and Stephen (Deanna) Malone of Lebanon, Ohio and grandfather to Ryder Malone, Sara Blankenburg, Jesse Malone, Jeffrey Lingg and Rachel West, and great-grandfather to Danny, Aria, Aiden, Lucy, Daxon, Austin, Leah and Grayson. His beloved wife of 56 years, Anne "Honey" Malone passed in November 2019.

Dan had an eclectic career including stints as a Marine, horse tattooer, sailing instructor, lifeguard, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselor, steel worker, Morse coder, investor, amateur genealogist, artist and ship's captain.

Dan Malone's life's journey began February 16, 1934, during a blizzard in Baltimore, Maryland. He was destined to weather more storms during his childhood. When he was eight, his father, Thomas Reagan Malone DDS died suddenly. His mother, Margaret Lydia Malone (nee Brown), was so shaken by her husband's sudden death she sent Dan to spend the rest of his childhood with his beloved grandmother, Grace Neff Brown Boyden (nee Wittman) and her husband Don Boyden.

He spent many happy days at the Baltimore YMCA and swimming at Beaver Dam. A life-long swimmer, he insisted that he always had access to a pool. Dan was an avid amateur genealogist who traced his lineage to Charlemagne. Along the way he discovered several ancestors at Jamestown and was a proud member of the Jamestown Society. He also joined the Sons of the American Revolution as well as the Ancient Planters Society. He shared this hobby with daughter Amy whom he discovered after taking a DNA test.

Dan held a U.S.C.G. Merchant Marine license. After retiring, Dan and his wife set sail on the QA II and settled in Marathon, Florida Keys where they formed the Banana Bay Sailing School and operated the sailboat Hootmon, a 37' center-cockpit ketch, famous for its sunset champagne cruises. For 16 years he and his wife taught sailing and snorkeling at Banana Bay until retiring again to Vero Beach, Florida. His wife's illness forced a move to York, PA to be closer to their oldest son. His beloved wife passed, Dan moved to Denver, Colorado to be close to his daughter. After one year he followed his daughter and son-in-law to St. George, Utah where he lived out his final days surrounded by beautiful landscapes and magnificent rock formations. His favorite ride was through Snow Canyon.

His lifelong dream of living in a luxury hotel was finally realized at Ovation Independent Living in Washington City, Utah where he resided for more than three years. The family wishes to thank the caring staffs of Canyon Home Care and Hospice and Ovation Assisted Living who gave him great care and comfort in his final days. A memorial Service is planned to take place in Baltimore, Maryland at a date to be determined.
