On April 23, 2025 in St George, UT, our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Janice Bergsjo Maples, returned to her heavenly home with our Lord, Jesus Christ. Janice was born in Logan, Utah on March 4, 1947 to Oliver Anton Bergsjo and Kathleen Grant Bergsjo.
Janice met her future husband on a blind date at church and after a short courtship, was sealed to James L. Maples on December 19, 1969 in the Logan Temple for time and all eternity.
She is survived by her husband, James Leonard Maples, her daughter Heidi (Chris) Gounaris, her son Jonathan (Yoshimi) Maples, and her grandchildren Joseph Mickey Maples, Aimy Shine Maples, Elena Gounaris, and Braxten Janson. Also survived by brother Grant Bergsjo and Carol Bergsjo Raleigh. She is preceded in death by her father, mother and son Justin Maples.
Janice was a very active and athletic child, and said she could beat all the boys in running races, even into high school. Janice was an avid ice skater; she would take her ice skates to school so she could skate until dark at the city ice rink. She loved to ski and play softball. She instilled in her husband a love for snow skiing, which influenced Jim to become a ski instructor from 1971 - 2001 at Beaver Mountain Ski Resort. Janice and family spent many wonderful days skiing together.
Janice also loved animals, especially cats. There were few times in her life that she was not tending to and caring for a cat in the home. It was a source of great pleasure for her children and grandchildren to find and give cat themed presents to her throughout her life.
Janice was well known for her culinary skills. She was always asked to bring her famous rolls and monkey bread to family get-togethers. She collected cook books and compiled hundreds (maybe thousands) of recipes. When asked, she freely shared her favorite dishes and recipes with others.
Janice was also a very service oriented individual and fulfilled many callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served for many years in Young Women and Relief Society Presidencies, as well as being an ordinance worker at the St. George, Utah Temple.
Family was very important to Janice, and she spent her entire life compiling and consolidating the Family Histories of her ancestors. She was instrumental in collecting the correct information, photos and journal entries of many ancestors. Her eternal perspective of family ties provides an example for the eternal bonds and makes the sealing power a reality.
Janice will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at a future date.
Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George, Utah. 435-673-2454.
