Joseph Charles Young

December 20, 1968 – November 18, 2025

Joe Young, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, left this world suddenly on November 18, 2025, at his home in St. George, Utah, at the age of 56.

Born on December 20, 1968, the youngest of ten children to Kerry Young Sr. and Dena Olson Zitting Young, Joe came into life with a light that never dimmed. He grew up in Short Creek, surrounded by his large family and a close-knit community. As a boy, he loved spending time playing with his mom, moments that often carried them outdoors, where he could be found in the dirt building little cities with his hands. Those early days in the yard grew into the imagination and skill that would later define his life’s work. Joe learned the basics of heavy equipment from Allen Steed on Steed Ranch, work that prepared him for a lifetime in excavation.

Joe began building his own path early, stepping into adulthood with determination, ambition, and an entrepreneurial spirit that shaped the hardworking man he became.

Joe married Heather Harper in 1996, with whom he shared 23 beautiful years of blended family life and companionship in Washington County, Utah.

Joe got his start in excavation working under Kay Traveller and Gail Maxwell, who taught him the skills and techniques that would guide not only his career, but instilled a goal oriented life direction.

As the owner of Handy Excavation, Joe did not just move earth. He shaped it with care, building trust and strong foundations in every project and in every life he touched. His handshake was as steady as his character, and his word was one you could always count on.

Known for his generosity, easy charm, and natural charisma, Joe never met a stranger. He could strike up a conversation anywhere with anyone and leave them smiling and standing a little taller than before.

Joe was deeply devoted to his children and grandchildren, who were the heartbeat of his life.

He is survived by his children: Dylon (Lindy), Adam, Austin (Samantha), Aubree (Austin), Alec (Emilee), Aryan, Amaree, and Ares. Alongside them are Trevor (Kait), Joni, Dallian, and Clay; twelve grandchildren; and his siblings Charlotte, Kerry, Vilate, Marion, Verleyn & Carol.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kerry and Dena Young; his siblings Esther, Carl & Larry Young; and precious grandchild, Avery.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Joe Young on December 20, 2025, his 57th birthday. Joe’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

A viewing will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Ward Meetinghouse, 1625 Lava Flow Drive, St. George, Utah.

The funeral service will begin in the chapel at 12:00 p.m.

Interment will follow at Isaac W. Carling Memorial Park in Colorado City, Arizona, under the care of Spilsbury Mortuary.
