Judy Ann Fillmore, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, and lifelong learner, passed away on April 21, 2026, at the age of 78. She was born on October 6, 1947, in Sandpoint, Idaho, to Donald and Grace Shadel Hand. From the very beginning, Judy carried a spirit of compassion, strength, and quiet determination that would shape every life she touched.
Judy spent her childhood in Sandpoint, where she graduated from high school. She later moved to Utah and completed her nursing education with BYU. While in Utah, she met her future husband, Alfred Fillmore, through mutual friends. They were married on February 25, 1977. Judy was a devoted and loving wife to Al and always referred to him as "the love of my life." Together, they built a home filled with laughter, resilience, and unwavering support for one another and their family.
Judy was a proud mother of two children and found her greatest joy in watching her family grow. She was a constant presence in the stands, cheering on her husband and children as they competed in rodeo events, a world she cherished deeply. The dust, determination, and discipline of rodeo life were close to her heart, not only for the sport itself, but for the time it gave her to support the people she loved most.
As her family grew, so did her pride and joy in them. Judy adored her six grandchildren: Dax (Rylee Shaw), Gracie Wood, Jayce Comer, Owen Comer, Hazel Comer, and Archer Comer, and treasured every moment spent watching them play sports, learn, and grow. Whether at a game, at home, or simply sharing stories, she was their biggest fan and a steady source of encouragement.
Professionally, Judy dedicated her life to nursing, where her compassion and skill made a lasting impact. As a registered nurse, she had a special passion for wound care and healing, taking great pride in helping her patients recover with dignity and comfort. She also earned her master's degree in nursing from the University of Nevada, using it to further serve and care for her patients. Her gentle hands and attentive care brought not only physical healing but also emotional reassurance to those she served.
Judy also carried a deep love for learning and teaching. As a retired professor with Weber State University, who also taught nursing at Dixie College and Southern Utah University, she believed knowledge was meant to be shared. She took every opportunity to guide, mentor, and uplift others-whether colleagues, patients, or family members. Her curiosity and wisdom were gifts she gave freely.
Judy will be remembered for her great love for Jesus Christ, her kindness, her strength, her dedication to her family, and her unwavering belief in the power of care, both in her profession and in her everyday life.
Judy is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Al Fillmore; her two daughters, Kaesi Fillmore and Karli (Kevin) Comer; her six grandchildren; her siblings, Trish Hill, Ruth (Larry) Teves, and Dennis (Meg) Hand; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. She was preceded in death by her mother, Grace Shadel; her father, Donald Hand; her mother-in-law, Doris Fillmore; her brother, Tim Hand; and her brother-in-law, Keith Hill.
Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the family she cherished, and the love she gave so generously.
