Rachel Lytle Gubler

Rachel Lytle Gubler, 88, of St. George, Utah, passed away December 30, 2023. She was born in the little pink house located on the corner of 3rd South and 4th East in St. George, Utah, on January 12, 1935, to George and Ila Dutson Lytle. She lived in St. George back when there were fewer than 2,000 residents. She spent the summers riding horses at their Mountain Meadows ranch, where it was much cooler.

Glen asked Rae to marry him on her 18th birthday. She married Glen J. Gubler on April 11, 1953, in the St. George Temple, while she was still attending Dixie High School. They have been married for 70 years.

During the Korean Conflict, the missionary force was very small, as the single young men had been drafted or had enlisted in the armed forces. Since Glen was one of the few young men left at home, he was called to serve in the Great Lakes Mission, even though he was married. They were separated for two years. Rachel said it gave her time to grow up.

Rachel and Glen eventually landed in Las Vegas, where they raised their six children. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rachel served in many callings. She served as Stake Relief Society President for ten years and served two church service missions to Deseret Industries, where she was responsible for the Home Craft Program.  On her second mission there, she taught quilting techniques to the Stakes in the Las Vegas Valley. The Las Vegas Temple was built while she was serving as the Stake Relief Society President. She was asked to prepare and serve dinner to the General Authorities at the temple dedication, which was a real highlight.

After 40 years in Las Vegas, Rachel and Glen moved back to St. George to care for their aging parents. After their parents passed away, they served a full-time mission to the Manila Philippines Temple and then served another mission in Lusaka Zambia Africa. They also served as ordinance workers in the St. George Temple for many years.

Rachel was a classy wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She loved everyone that she knew.  She was a writer, a baker, a quilter, a master seamstress, and had a beautiful alto voice.

Rachel is survived by her beloved husband, Glen J. Gubler, her children; Alan and Donna Gubler of Ruth, NV, Angela Gubler of Las Vegas, NV, Kristin and Ward Marshall of St. George, UT, Jonathan and Lisa Gubler of Diamond Valley, UT,  Kalin and James Skousen of Orem, UT,  Melissa and Brian Dabb of Orem, UT; 30 grandchildren, and 73 great-grandchildren.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; George and Ila Dutson Lytle, her sisters; Carolyn Garrett and  Marie Myer, her brother; Stanley Lytle and her sons; Brantley George Gubler and Nathan Jay Gubler.
