Sheila Kay Johnson

Cedar City

Cedar City, Utah—Sheila Kay Johnson, 69, passed away April 3, 2023, from the effects of a long-term battle with a rare disease. She was born July 15, 1953, in Portland, Oregon to Mazel Kay Johnson and Lucy Maurine Gardner Johnson.    

Sheila’s mother passed away when she was young, and a few years later she went to live with her Uncle George and Lois Fry and their family. She graduated from high school in Twin Falls, Idaho, and attended Dixie College where she earned her associate degree. She then moved to Provo, Utah, to further her schooling and graduated from Brigham Young University with her bachelor’s degree. 

Shortly thereafter she was hired as Assistant Registrar at Southern Utah University and worked there with the staff and students for 45 years. Sheila enjoyed traveling and seeing new places, and she traveled often representing the university in educational conventions. She retired from SUU in the fall of 2021.

She was accomplished in music, playing the piano and organ, and participating in the bell choir. She had a beautiful soprano voice and was called upon to sing in performance choirs and solos for special occasions. She also created enjoyed needle work, crochet, and knitting. She created many beautiful projects which she shared with family and friends. Sheila served diligently in various positions of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a devout lifetime member of her church.

She is survived by her brother, Stephen Michael Johnson, his wife Doris, and nieces Lucy Kay Maloney (Bryan), and Stephanie Johnson, all from Veyo, Utah.

Sheila is preceded in death by her parents, Mazel Kay Johnson and Lucy Maurine Johnson and a nephew, Joseph Leo Johnson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 14, 2023, at 11:00 am, at the Willowood Ward Chapel, 638 East Canyon Center Dr. in Cedar City, Utah.

Friends may visit on Thursday, April 13 from 5:00--7:00 pm, at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street in St. George, Utah. 

A second visitation will be held the morning of April 14, 2023, prior to the services from 9:00--10:30 am, at the Willowood Ward Chapel in Cedar City. 

Interment will take place in the Pine Valley Cemetery.
