Stephen J. Hawley, age 84, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, surrounded by his loving family in St. George, Utah.
Born April 19, 1941, in South Gate, California, to Hugh and Rozella Hawley, Stephen was raised between Southern California and Sevier County, Utah-a balance that shaped his strong sense of duty, compassion, and quiet strength.
Stephen married the love of his life, Stella Hawley, on August 28, 1977. Together they shared 48 years of devoted marriage, building a family rooted in love, faith, and integrity.
A lifelong public servant, Stephen proudly served as a police officer and detective. Known affectionately by his fellow officers as "Father Hawley," he was a mentor, protector, and example to many. His dedication extended beyond the badge; he had the rare honor of working alongside President Richard Nixon at the Western White House.
When he wasn't serving his community, Stephen found joy in life's simple pleasures-fishing, jogging, and spending cherished time with his family. Above all, he was a loving husband, a devoted father, and a proud grandfather.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Stella; sons Robert (Brenda) and Christopher (Alonna); daughters Barbara (Blake) Curry and Karen (Scott) Miller; 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Rozella; first wife Loralee Hall Hawley; his brothers, Chuck and Larry; and his grandson; Jordan, .
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 South Dixie Drive, St. George, Utah. Arrangements are under the care of Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 South Bluff Street, St. George, UT 84770.
